Overview — Chora & Will, for their first joint event, asked Algo to build a giant interactive data installation featuring 8 counters that track what’s happening in Italy during the 3 days of the festival. The counters showcase how much time italians collectively spent reading news or listening to podcasts & so on.

The screen was so big that visitors couldnt avoid seeing it as they entered the festival. Additionally, an iPad booth was set up for visitors to interact and influence the counters: by answering a question about their own habits, they could see how they compare to other visitors & add or subtract a few hours from that specific counter.

We started working by receiving the festival visual identity, created by Giulia Mangano & Raffaella Di Donato (from Will). It was based on strong gradients, giant snaky curves & organic shapes. Perfect.

We instantly started playing with the snaky curves and typography  but werent sure how big the total number of hours would be for each counter. So we started looking for data and ended up finding most of what we needed on this research by We Are Social.

After some math, the number was bigger than we expected. So we decided we needed to use Years & Months to write down an amount that could be easily understood. And that anything smaller than Hours would move just too fast to be seen.

Tech  We picked GSAP for the counter animation, since we needed something fully interactive. Snakes & shapes are Lottie animations, handled via two different loops (for transitions & idle). Lottie allows us to customize colors to match each topic.

The React web app is split in 2 front-ends: the screen & tablet. Real-time communication among them is handled via Socket.IO. The most challenging aspect was probably making sure the loop of topics could be re-organized after a visitor responded to a question, to make sure they could see their result being added up on the big screen.

The data experience also runs in-between talks on the screens of Fucine, the venue main room holding 1.270 people  via a 16:9 adaptation of the app. The whole project was brought to life in around 5 weeks.
In the end, were easy people to work with... give us a giant screen, like Will did, and well live happily ever after.
